Donavon Frankenreiter

I have loved Donavon Frankenreiter’s (quite a mouthful of a name) music for a while now. His style is similar to Jack Johnson, or maybe G. Love – definitely my kind of music. His music actually reminds me of one summer in high school when I drove another crappy car (if you’ve ever seen my history of vehicles you would know that I’m not one for flashy automobiles. Although, when I grow up maybe I will have a nice, real car. We’ll see…) His music reminds me of this car because my radio was broke – and if you know me, you know I’m not driving around without music – so what did I do? Nope, I didn’t get it fixed (I was in high school, no money obviously)…I found an old cd player I had in my room (boom box style), plopped it in the passenger seat of my car, threw in Donavon’s first solo album, cranked it up and went on my merry little way. Hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

So, Donavon’s music reminds me of my youth :) along with summertime, the beach, Long Island, and happiness. Needless to say I was thrilled to have finally gotten a chance to see him live at the Blue Ocean Music Hall at the Pavilion on Salisbury Beach a couple of weeks ago. We enjoyed a full day of sun on the beach (it was such a beautiful day!) then dinner at Capri (which was delicious), followed by the concert. A really, really great day!

Check it out:

Started the day off with my first ever trip to DQ

“I got the notion that life in Hawaii was one, long sweet song” (And 100 Days of Kindness, Day 64)

I don’t think I’ve ever talked about my life in Hawaii here before… I was just doing some Monday night Facebook creeping and saw my friend Amanda and Joe’s honeymoon pictures from Hawaii (looked amazing!) and then went back to my pictures from Hawaii because it made me miss it so much.

Hawaii is an amazing, magical place. ‘Paradise’ really is the perfect way to describe it. Somehow, my best friend from growing up – Mary and my good friend from Merrimack – Jen, finagled a way to ‘study abroad’ in Hawaii for a semester in college. I literally still can’t believe we all convinced our parents to let us go. Genius!

We had the best time ever living in Waikiki, going to school in Honolulu, learning to surf, hiking, visiting beautiful waterfalls, spending time on the beach every day and ‘weekending’ in Maui (well one weekend, but ‘weekending in Maui’ just sounds so much better). I even met one of my most favorite people in the world, Jack Johnson which truly was a dream come true. It was one of the most memorable times in my life and I will never forget it. I haven’t been back since, but really look forward to the next time I can visit. :)

A few highlights:

Just beautiful

Jack Johnson!

Oh I miss it!

My kindness today: My friend Jess and I decided to treat our team at work to a Starbucks run in order to start the New Year off right!

Jack Johnson is amazing. So is Cafeteria Boston & Healthworks (while we’re at it…)

First week back from vacation in one word: busy.

Saturday night we had the Jack Johnson concert, in one word: amazing. ALO played (great band. Their song “Girl I Wanna Lay You Down” is one of my all time favorites) and Glove played as well, so it was a perfect line-up.

I’ve been a huge Jack Johnson fan forever, yet this was my first concert of his and it was just so damn good. He is one of the bests live performers I’ve ever seen. We started our evening out with some sandwiches, chips and beers. :)

ALO

Glove

Secondly, you all know how much I love a good deal. And if you read my guest post over at the Foodies at Work you probably know that I love a delicious burger even more {there’s just nothing more satisfying than a good burger.} Last night I found a fabulous combo of the two; a good deal and a delicious burger. Now, you know I was in heaven, right?!

I met Nicole (my work best friend from my last job) for dinner at Cafeteria Boston on Newbury Street. They have perfect outdoor seating, but it was raining on and off so we sat inside at the bar. We started off with some sangria which was so good, very refreshing. Neither of us knew if we wanted red sangria or white sangria, so the bartender (I am a jerk and am forgetting his name which I’m sorry for because he was so friendly and we really liked him!) let us taste a little of each to help us decide. Ultimately, I chose the white (although they were both very nice) and Nicole chose the red.

Mmmm sangria

Lucky for us, they had $5 burger special! You know I had me some of that. It.was.perfection. The burger was cooked just the way I like it – it wasn’t too small, wasn’t too big or overwhelming, and it had the special Cafeteria sauce on top which was a tasty little surprise. It was honestly so good (and I was insanely hungry) I wanted to order another burger but I had to control myself/didn’t want to embarrass myself…

We also ordered a side of Parmesan fries which was big enough to split between the both of us (I mean I could have finished a whole side by myself, but we were being good.) All their dishes are created using organic grass-fed beef and lamb along with local, organic produce – you gotta love/appreciate that.

I’d like to send a HUGE thank you out to Demetri from Cafeteria, he was so great to us! I’m definitely going back!

Tomorrow I’m hosting a dinner party for Christine’s birthday (I missed it while I was in Ireland) so I’m really pumped about it. Hopefully all goes well – more details to come! I can’t wait for the weekend. You?

And last but not least…I hope you took advantage of Healthworks Free Workout Day today – it’s the best gym ever! And on Friday Healthworks Back Bay is hosting a Les Mills launch for Body Jam and Body Pump, you should check it out. They’ll have prizes from Redbones and City Sports as well as refreshments from the Healthworks cafe!

Jack Johnson Here I Come

So, today is the day. I am a HUGE Jack Johnson fan, I have been for years now. I own every album and whenever I listen to his music it’s a guarantee to instantly make me happy. JJ puts out some great feel good, make you smile, laid-back, relaxing music and I can’t get enough of it.

The thing is… I’ve never seen him in concert! Never. So lame. I “studied abroad” in Hawaii and figured I would absolutely, 100% get to see him play live there, but that was a no go. However, I did get to see him live, just not playing a show. My friend Jen and I (our last week there) met him at the Pearl Jam/U2 concert. It was amazing – we were on the will call line waiting for our tickets when BAM! Jack Johnson walked by us. Since he didn’t come over to say hi (so rude) I decided we should go over and say hi. He was extremely nice and even took a picture with us!

Needless to say, even though I didn’t get to see him play live in Hawaii, I was pretty happy with the fact that I met him, shook his hand and took a picture with him (he put his hand on my lower back while taking the picture, no big deal…)

Me, Jack and Jen!

So tonight is the night I finally get to see him play live! I am more than pumped. To top it all off, glove and ALO are playing as well – two more great performers. :)

Well, we have our sandwiches, snacks and beers all set – Colin and I are off to the show! Have a great Saturday night and I’ll have plenty of wedding posts coming at you this week. Simply put, it was beyond amazing! xo

And it’s just another Manic Monday

When I say ‘this weekend was a busy one’, I mean it. We had so much to do which made those two precious days go by so fast!

Friday I got to leave work a little earlier than usual, got on an early train and had time to relax before I headed out for the evening. It was so nice! I just vegged out in front of the TV – caught up with the cast of ‘Glee’ on Oprah. After spending time with Oprah, I spent time with Danielle. D and I grabbed some delicious sushi then headed to Merrimack to see their performance of RENT. It was excellent; I was very impressed – such amazing voices!

Saturday morning I woke up with a migraine. TERRIBLE! Like, seriously – why on a Saturday? I slowly got it together and made some moves. First move – buy Jack Johnson tickets for July 12th. CAN NOT WAIT for the concert – I loove me some Jack Johnson and I’ve never seen him perform. I have however met him at the Pearl Jam/U2 concert in Hawaii a few years ago. That was one of the best days of my life. Second move – go run important errands and browse a few shops. Since I dropped the ball on Rent the Runway, I figured I might as well have a look… I found a really cute dress to wear to the wedding so I was pumped!

Not the best picture, but you get the gist...

Saturday night was the wedding and although I had a migraine I powered through and we had a great time – so much fun! Bim looked gorgeous and extremely happy – her and Scott seemed to really enjoy the whole evening.

It was funny to be socializing/drinking/dancing with ‘work people.’ Colin was a huge hit as usual! I love having him with me at social events, he is so good - talks to anyone, doesn’t mind dancing, just likes to have a good time. He makes everyone laugh and people generally love him (especially me!)

OH! Also… I caught the bouquet! This little man visiting over from Thailand (Bim is Thai) caught the garter. I had to sit on the chair in front of everyone while this man put the garter on my thigh - in front of work people. Pretty interesting…

Sunday morning we got up early and hit the road – destination, St. Johnsbury VT for Colin’s grandfather’s birthday party! It was a really good time – I love getting to see all of Colin’s family. The drive back was beautiful (and I was actually awake for most of it.)

Still a little snow on the mountain...

Congratulations to Phil Mickelson for his Master’s win!! The good husband, dad, son, person, etc. won and that is something to celebrate. After a tough year supporting his wife as well as his mother with their battle against breast cancer, he won a battle of his own. He might have even taught Tiger a thing or two about karma.

Tonight we went to see RENT performed at Merrimack. It was awesome – they did such a great job! I was impressed by the fact that Merrimack decided to put on what could be called a ‘controversial’ show (dealing with AIDS/HIV, drug use, girls kissing girls, boys kissing boys, gender confusion etc.), especially with the fact that Merrimack is a private, Catholic school. Good for them!

I love the music, the characters, pretty much everything about RENT and I truly thought they did the show justice tonight. Congratulations!

Tomorrow is a busy day. I have to run 11 miles, YIKES!

After that, we have my co-workers wedding tomorrow night, which Colin and I are really excited for. Should be a great time! Although, I was not able to ‘Rent the Runway‘ unfortunately! I totally dropped the ball on that – I waited to the last minute to remember that I wanted to rent a dress! Ugh. Luckily Nicole helped me out BIG time and brought in some dresses today for me to try out, so we’ll see, I haven’t decided on one yet…
Time for rest. Goodnight!

Peace and quiet

I’m in the house by myself. I’m currently sitting in my room in peace and quiet. It’s honestly a miracle after the past few days I have had. I’ve been going non-stop and let me tell you – it is draining. Do you ever feel like all the energy is just sucked right out of you? Or that there aren’t enough hours in the day? Ugh, why can’t I be a superhero? They can do everything…

Anyway, I am SO SORRY for not posting yesterday and all of today! I’m not following the rules of ‘no excuses, blog like a champion.’ I’m ashamed of myself and will strive to be a better blogger everyday. Especially for you Jean!

So tonight I helped judge the science fair at Meg’s school (Bellesini Academy in Lawrence, all boys grades 5-8.) At first I felt stupid, ‘Wait what is the variable? The thing that stays the same or the thing that changes?’ ‘And the control is the opposite, right?’ Ugh, I was never good at science.

I learned a thing or two which was nice. The judging part was hard, they all did a nice job so I was throwing 5′s out left and right (scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest score.) I didn’t want the people tallying up the points to think my scoring was fishy, so I threw in a few 4′s and one or two 3′s – it was stressful. Oh, I also think it’s worth mentioning that the boys at Meg’s school all think Meg and I are twins – mainly because we’re white, tall and have blond hair. They get a reeeal kick out of saying ‘Miss Mescall ‘and having both of us turn around to respond. Oh adolescent boys!

I hate the circus

Naveen Sultan of Telegraph21, ‘a new video magazine featuring the best documentary films and art videos from around the world’ passed this clip on to me (thank you!), which I would like to share with you. Here is a clip from ‘Cover Girl Culture,’ a documentary by Nicole Clark (producer/director/former Elite model.)

http://www.telegraph21.com/video/cover-girl-culture

This documentary explores the world of fashion as well as the thoughts, feelings and self-critiques of young women affected by the messages that designers, models, advertisers, editors, magazines in general, etc. put out into the world. Many people in the Fashion Industry who are partially responsible for low self-esteem among young women (for showing unattainable body images for the average young woman) say they want to see ‘healthy, happy’ girls in their magazines and on the runway. Well, if you want to see them so bad, where are they? One young woman in the clip explains how magazines say, ‘Don’t worry about your weight, but look at this [pin-thin model.]‘ This is an unfair, not to mention, confusing message. To those in the Fashion Industry, working for fashion magazines – You can not tell these girls, ‘You are beautiful because you are different, healthy is ‘in’, feel good about your body,’ etc. etc. when you are still only showing extremely thin women in your magazines.

All we’re asking is for you is to do what you say you’re going to do. Why can’t it be ‘in’ for young women around the world to read your magazines and while they’re reading, they see girls who look like them, girls they can identify with? Maybe it’s time to get in the mindset of – ‘When a young woman reads my magazine, she’s going to feel empowered, beautiful and happy.’ And by saying this I mean showing every type of young women – thin included. There are obviously all different body types, skin types, skin colors, hair/eye colors, etc. let’s help everyone feel included. A young woman’s ego, self-esteem and self-worth are so extremely important -  magazines could play such a huge role in affecting these three things in a positive way, if taken seriously.

March showers bring April flowers?

So instead of giving up something for Lent this year, I decided to do something positive. My something positive is to train for a half marathon and complete one by the end of April. A half marathon has been on my to-do list for a while now, so why not just cross it off sooner rather than later? Plus, having a set goal for myself is truly motivating.

Today’s supposed to be my day off from training, however since I didn’t get to workout with the rain ruining our race yesterday, I did my 5 mile run today. The run would have been a heck of a lot easier if the man on the treadmill next to me wasn’t farting the whole time! That was quite a challenge.

The half marathon I’m training for is called the Middlebury Maple Run. It’s in a really beautiful part of Vermont on Sunday, April 25th. I just started my fourth week of training and I still haven’t signed up for the race because I’m nervous! I’ll do it soon…
