They stand there, tense. Nobody moves a muscle. Most are crouched in the ‘ready to run’ position as if they were at a track meet, ready to win. Some stare up at the board so intensely their eyes might bulge out of their heads. Everybody stands around, waiting and waiting to make their move. They wait for the man in charge to tell them where to go. Then, ding! The bell goes off and the announcement has been made – there’s no turning back now. The heard of people make a run for it. People are elbowing, pushing, some are even boxing out. Hearts race, anxiety levels rise, sweat pours down their faces.
All to get a good seat on the 5:15 commuter rail.
