Treats!

There’s just something about coming into work on a Thursday morning, knowing that at 2pm you’re headed to Starbucks for a break with your co-workers. Today Starbucks was {kindly} giving out free treats with a drink purchase. We absolutely took advantage, and I believe we may even take advantage again tomorrow (you should too!). It was such a nice little break, and I must say my treat was 100% delicious.

Look at Starbucks with their fancy new logo!

In other random news:

SJP and Christina Hendricks (among many other famous stars) have been filming their new movie “I Don’t Know How She Does It” in Boston the past few days. So wished I could have spotted them! Anybody see them around?

Also, I’ve taken the first few steps into the craziness we call ‘wedding planning’ and wow Jenny Yoo has some amazing dresses! (For both brides and bridesmaids)

The Golden Globes (And 100 Days of Kindness, Day 77)

Just finished watching the Golden Globes – I love award’s season!

Onto the kindness for today, I treated Colin to Starbucks AND I watched football for him. A whole game and a half! Girlfriend of the year anyone?

Just being sarcastic of course (or am I?). We had a great day hanging out with friends watching the Pats/Jets game. Sorry Pats fans! :( Congrats Jets fans! :)

A few quick notes about the Golden Globes:

  • January Jones, you are a babe
  • Sandra Bullock, I prefer you without your intense bangs
  • Natalie P, you are too cute to even care about the questionable dress
  • The Social Network, I think you may have won too many awards
  • Ryan Gosling, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Mark Wahlberg, Colin Firth, Matt Damon (etc.) you are all dapper gentlemen if I do say so myself
  • Good for you Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch!
  • The mom from The Fighter – totally unrecognizable! Awesome.
  • Ricky Gervais – outrageous
  • It’s extremely interesting to watch shots of the actors before a commercial break mixing and mingling. What are Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie talking about? How freaking fabulous they are?
  • Emma Stone, I look forward to your red hair again once you dye it back
  • Leighton Meester I did not like your dress. You can do better
  • Trent Reznor!
  • Halle Berry literally does NOT age, and always looks 150% amazing
  • Claire Danes, fabulous…just fabulous
  • I love you Tom Hanks! I always will
  • What was up with ScarJo’s hair?
  • Lastly, I really need to see The Kids Are All Right and Black Swan asap (already put Kids in my Netflix queue)

Best dressed?

I think it might be a tie between Claire Danes and Mila Kunis – loved both dresses

The beautiful Claire Danes

Love this!

Sewing (And, 100 Days of Kindness, Day 19)

Last week I took a sewing class with a few fabulous bloggers – Elizabeth, Annelise and Christy at Grey’s Fabrics and Notions in the South End (thanks for organizing Annelise!). I definitely learned a thing or two about sewing (I’m such an amateur) and to be quite honest, I don’t think I’ll be quitting my day job anytime soon…

My pillow made it out of the store in one piece thanks to Sarah (the owner) – I did a lot of my pillow, but Sarah helped big time. So a big thanks to her!

Here is my pillow!

There she is! I made that!

My ‘kindness’ today – this morning I stopped in at Starbucks before I headed off to work (hi ho, hi ho…) and got a latte for myself as well as Meg. I hand-delivered it to Meg’s apartment on my way to the office.

She was happy as a clam!

I also texted my awesome Uncle Danny (my uncle and godfather) to wish him a Happy Birthday! I hope he’s enjoying himself.

Have a great weekend everyone. :)

Rock, Paper, Scissors

You need to trust him or her. He or she needs to know how to make you feel beautiful, make you feel good. They need to know what’s best for you. They can not be selfish. They need to take care of you as if you were as fragile as a baby bird. They need to talk to you, and in turn really listen to what you have to say. Communication is key with this person. They are one of the most important people in your life.

No, not your significant other.

Your hair stylist!

I recently visited the gang over at Rock, Paper, Scissors Salon on Newbury Street courtesy of the amazing ladies at Healthworks (thanks again!) They very wonderfully squeezed me in after work on a Friday evening so my hair could look gorgeous for a Friday night out on the town for a Friday night watching the Celts play in my apartment. Hey Colin and some of the girls came over so at least they could appreciate it!

Anyway, I walked into the stylish salon and immediately felt ‘cool’ (surprisingly I don’t always feel cool – I know I know, it’s very surprising.) The vibe you get from the exposed brick walls, to the interesting photographs that decorate the walls, is ‘effortlessly hip.’ The salon manager Tracey was so friendly and made me felt at ease right away (it’s always nerve-wracking trying out a new salon!) My hair stylist was Mia, and not only was she talented and extremely nice (she even got me a coffee from Starbucks when I was waiting for my color to finish – ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! SO friggin nice. I loved it) she was also cute, bubbly and made nice but not forced conversation. I appreciate that when I’m getting my hair done!

And now…the hair. I loved it! It came out great. Subtle highlights, a great cut and a perfect blowout. Mia was thebomb.com. And, I also bought some fabulous products before I left. I NEVER do this. I actually always make fun of my sister Meg for doing this. However, I am a big girl now and hardly own anything to put in my hair, so I bought some hair clay and hair tonic (all their products are made with SPF, so I thought this would be good for the summer!) Overall, I highly suggest RPS.

RPS is dedicated to ‘making you the best version of you’ with very reasonable prices along with open arms welcoming everyone and anyone. ‘There are no judgements here’ their website says.

From their website:

“Rock Paper Scissors takes the idea of a luxury salon and molds it into something that feels comfortable and easy going.
We like to laugh and smile and want our customers to feel like they are at a chill Sunday afternoon at their best friend’s place.
Bring an instrument, an iPod, a new band’s demo to listen to in the salon or a concert dvd to watch on our flatscreen.
Come on in and make yourself at home.”

They are located at 163 Newbury Street, Boston. Hours are Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 8pm and Saturdays, 9am – 6pm. (617) 236.6300

‘OWN life’ -LP

Four years ago today the Merrimack College community lost a beautiful, vivacious, amazing young lady too soon.

Today, I can’t help thinking about the fact that life is too short. We hear this phrase all the time, but do we truly believe it? Many of us have lost young people in our lives and when this happens, you realize that there are no guarantees in life. We truly need to appreciate every day we are blessed with.

We complain, we wish the work week away in order to get to the weekend, we hold grudges, we make excuses for ourselves so we don’t have to work out, we let petty things come between us, we drink too much, we eat too much, we don’t take care of our bodies, we want to have someone else’s life, we want more money, we take ourselves too seriously, we don’t go after our dreams, we don’t always say how we feel or voice our opinions, we miss chances by not taking risks, we forget how to live our lives to the fullest.

Go out there and live your life. Everyday is a gift. Try new things, put yourself out there, meet new people, go on adventures, don’t waste all your money on stupid things, save some for retirement, take pride in your work, take care of your body – find new ways to work out, eat well, and have fun with it, don’t be afraid you’re going to embarrass yourself, go after the things you really want – if you fall asleep thinking about it, if you can’t stop thinking about it all day – you need to make it happen, enjoy yourself, your significant other, your family, your friends – look for fun things to do with them or just by yourself, appreciate your job – if you can’t stand it, look for a new one, aspire to be the best person you can be, always look for new ways to improve, work hard, laugh at yourself, enjoy the little things life has to offer, when something bad happens cry and get it over with – try to find the positivity in the situation, speak up for yourself, speak out for others who need a voice, have compassion, find exciting ways to volunteer your time, give back to the community, don’t make promises you can’t keep, travel, make time to do things you love, tell the people you love that you love them every day, avoid getting into stupid fights, don’t waste time on jealousy, don’t feel pressure to do things you don’t want to do, use your brain, no matter what religion you are: pray, most of all – remember that your life is precious and you only get once chance at it. Don’t you want to be proud of what you left behind?

The lovely Nuge passed this poem on to me so I figured I would pass it on to you guys. It’s really nice -

Gardening God’s Way

Plant three rows of peas:
Peace of mind
Peace of heart
Peace of soul

Plant four rows of squash:
Squash gossip
Squash indifference
Squash grumbling
Squash selfishness

Plant four rows of lettuce:
Lettuce be faithful
Lettuce be kind
Lettuce be obedient
Lettuce really love one another

No garden without turnips:
Turnip for meetings
Turnip for service
Turnip to help one another
Water freely with patience and cultivate love

There is much fruit for your garden
Because you reap what you sow.

To conclude our garden
We must have thyme:
Thyme for God
Thyme for study
Thyme for prayer
Thyme for each other
Thyme for friends
(Author Unknown)

Thanks Nuge! ;)

Don’t forget, the wonderful people at Starbucks are filling up your reusable tumblers/travel mugs for free today, all day. Let’s get rid of paper cups, such a waste!

I hope that everyone is having a great day. I hope that LP is resting peacefully. And in her wise words, I hope everyone chooses to ‘OWN life.’

Who YOU callin’ immature?

Got home, parked my car. Opened up the driver’s side door – which squeaks so bad/sounds like its going to fall right off its hinges – to get out. I get out only to hear laughing on the otherwise quiet street. Look to see who is laughing and it’s a group of four Andover Prep kids staring at me and my precious car, making fun of us. I wanted to yell something so bad, I wanted to make fun - but I figured that is relatively immature. They are in high school and I am a ‘working professional,’ big difference I guess?… Anyway, this incident was a major blow to both our egos so I think I’ll bring ‘ol Betsy to get a good wash over the weekend. At least that’ll make one of us feel better about ourselves!

On the other hand, something nice that happened to me yesterday…

Went to Starbucks to satisfy my caffeine addiction, paid for my drink with my gift card, then owed .18 cents because I didn’t have enough on my card. My only other option was my debit card and using your debit card for .18 cents is lame and the lady behind me knew it, so she gave me a quarter! So nice :)

On a sad note, four people were murdered in Chicago. WHY is this happening? When I lived in Chicago last year a young man from the high school two of my roommates worked at was killed. The teacher I worked with had a niece who was shot coming out of her house (luckily she survived.) People who worked in local hospitals on the south side of Chicago said it looked like a war zone in there at times due to all the gun shot wounds. This is terrible, and deeply troubling. Something needs to be done. Please keep these people in your thoughts and prayers.

Tonight I’m going to make Colin a nice dinner – Rigatoni with chicken, fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, onion, etc. Hopefully it comes out good!

We’re also finishing up the first season of ‘How to Make It in America’ on HBO. It’s really good so far – Colin and I watched the first five episodes the other night and I’ve been excited all day to watch the rest. If you have HBO on demand I suggest you spend some time watching. It’s sort of like ‘Entourage’ in NYC, more involved with the fashion/music scene rather than acting…. Let me know what you think :)

We are inching closer to the weekend people, such a nice feeling…

And it’s just another Manic Monday

When I say ‘this weekend was a busy one’, I mean it. We had so much to do which made those two precious days go by so fast!

Friday I got to leave work a little earlier than usual, got on an early train and had time to relax before I headed out for the evening. It was so nice! I just vegged out in front of the TV – caught up with the cast of ‘Glee’ on Oprah. After spending time with Oprah, I spent time with Danielle. D and I grabbed some delicious sushi then headed to Merrimack to see their performance of RENT. It was excellent; I was very impressed – such amazing voices!

Saturday morning I woke up with a migraine. TERRIBLE! Like, seriously – why on a Saturday? I slowly got it together and made some moves. First move – buy Jack Johnson tickets for July 12th. CAN NOT WAIT for the concert – I loove me some Jack Johnson and I’ve never seen him perform. I have however met him at the Pearl Jam/U2 concert in Hawaii a few years ago. That was one of the best days of my life. Second move – go run important errands and browse a few shops. Since I dropped the ball on Rent the Runway, I figured I might as well have a look… I found a really cute dress to wear to the wedding so I was pumped!

Not the best picture, but you get the gist...

Saturday night was the wedding and although I had a migraine I powered through and we had a great time – so much fun! Bim looked gorgeous and extremely happy – her and Scott seemed to really enjoy the whole evening.

It was funny to be socializing/drinking/dancing with ‘work people.’ Colin was a huge hit as usual! I love having him with me at social events, he is so good - talks to anyone, doesn’t mind dancing, just likes to have a good time. He makes everyone laugh and people generally love him (especially me!)

OH! Also… I caught the bouquet! This little man visiting over from Thailand (Bim is Thai) caught the garter. I had to sit on the chair in front of everyone while this man put the garter on my thigh - in front of work people. Pretty interesting…

Sunday morning we got up early and hit the road – destination, St. Johnsbury VT for Colin’s grandfather’s birthday party! It was a really good time – I love getting to see all of Colin’s family. The drive back was beautiful (and I was actually awake for most of it.)

Still a little snow on the mountain...

Now, onto today’s business -

On 4/15 bring in a reusable tumbler and Starbucks will fill it for free in an effort to get rid of paper cups!

Congratulations to Phil Mickelson for his Master’s win!! ‘Num nums?’ Really?

First and foremost - I am pretttty sure he doesn’t read my famous blog, but in any case I’d like to give a shout out to an amazing man, Fr. Jim! Happy Birthday!!

Ok, so my singing co-worker is at it again! Although it’s ridiculous work behavior, maybe it’s good for me to hear about ‘praising Him’ in order to get in the Easter spirit?

Another lady in the cube right around the corner from me (I won’t go into detail too much on this one, that would take a while…) was just on the phone and said the word ‘num nums’ in reference to her food. I have a major problem with a grown woman using this word/phrase (whatever it is!) Understandable if a cute little five-year-old is saying it, it’s even understandable when parents use ‘baby-talk’ around their kids (although, that can quickly spiral out of control) but it is 150% not understandable when a grown woman says ‘num-nums’ at work, out loud, on the phone, with no children in sight.

In other news, today is April Fool’s Day, so for all you fools out there – have a happy one! I don’t currently have any plans to trick anyone today, but hey ya never know. Ideas are welcome.

Have a great rest of the day! :)

He was injured, injured bad

The Celtics/Knicks game last night was a fist-pumpin’ good time. Started off with a traditional Irish dinner (for St. Patrick’s Day) of pizza and beer at Halftime Pizza – it was delicious. We actually got a nice booth too which usually never happens, so we were off to a good start.

The game was fun to watch, the Celtics played great – Paul Pierce had 29 points at the end of the game, KG not too far behind with 22. Last game we went to, the energy was low and people seemed disinterested. Fans were even booing the C’s. This time was very different, the energy was excellent; lots of fun. There were even Irish Step dancers at halftime! They were really good – very different from when I used to dance though. I guess I’m an old school step dancer, because from the amount of glitter on their dresses last night you would’ve thought we were at Studio 54. We didn’t do glitter. The boys especially did not wear rhinestone vests with hot pink ties (not that there’s anything wrong with that.) And wigs (they are so intense) didn’t make an appearance on the step dancing scene till I moved on to basketball in 7th grade. What happened to the old-fashioned way of curling your hair? I remember the good ol’ days the night before a feis (step dance competition) when my mother would patiently put curlers in my hair, I would sleep on them as if they were a bed of nails, and then in the morning my mother would not-as-patiently rip the curlers out as we rushed to get ready to leave (understandable – the whole process was relatively frustrating for both parties.)

Anyway, I went to the Celtics/Bulls game last year (while I was volunteering in Chicago) on St. Patrick’s Day and now I went again this year. I was pumped I got to go, I think I’m starting a new tradition… Final score – Celtics 109 – Knicks 97 – must’ve been the luck of the Irish!

Ready for the game
